The majority of precious metals mining in the US is performed by surface techniques, such as strip mining and open-pit mining. Surface mining results in a very low percentage of recovered metals vs. the overburden and ore spoils. For every one ton of gold ore mined, only seven to eight pennies worth of gold is extracted.
