Puente Hills Landfill

COMANCO was subcontracted by Chino Grading to supply and install the geosynthetic liner at Puente Hills landfill for Los Angeles County. Work consisted of installing 60 mil D/S textured liner, GCL, 80 mil D/S textured liner, D/S Geocomposite on the floor of phase 6. GCL, 80 mil D/S textured Liner, 4 oz Geotextile, S/S Geocomposite, and Protective Membrane on the slopes. All slopes were 2.5:1 to 3:1. No horizontal seams were allowed on the slopes, all horizontal seams had to be made on the benches or floor only. This required a customized roll length order to minimize the waste percentage on the project. Every roll delivered to site had a specific place to be deployed to eliminate the horizontal seams on the slopes.
Landfill
A solid waste landfill is a complex, engineered system with many components working together to assure that environmental standards for containment are achieved. There are four basic components to consider in the conceptual phase of constructing a solid waste landfill; the hydrogeology of the land being considered, the bottom liner, a leachate collection plan and the landfill cover system. All of these are critical and have many sub-components depending on specific needs, but a correctly designed and constructed bottom liner is most critical to successful waste management.
Landfill liners prevent leachate from exploring hydraulic connections to the surrounding environment, particularly groundwater. Bottom liners can be as simple as a single membrane layer and as complex as a “double-composite” system where multiple layers of membrane, clay components and drainage medium are combined to provide ultimate prevention.
