Grady Road Landfill Phase II – Cells 6 & 7 Construction

Owner: ETC of Georgia, LLC

Location: Cedartown, Georgia

Project Description:

The project consisted of the construction of two Subtitle D landfill units, approximately 12 acres in area, complete with liner, leachate collection/transmission system, storm water separation devices, and related earthwork. Below is an aerial photograph of the project depicting both the cell area under construction and the associated soil processing site.

Scope

The general scope of the project included:

  • Mass excavation of soil - approximately 500,000 cubic yards
  • Segregation and screening of soil - approximately 100,000 cubic yards
  • Installation of recompacted clay liner - approximately 40,000 cubic yards
  • Installation of 60 mil Textured HDPE Liner with geotextile - approximately 600,000 square feet
  • Placement of protective cover - approximately 42,000 cubic yards
  • Installation of leachate collection and transmission system - approximately 3,000 lineal feet

Mass Excavation

A major component of the Grady Road Landfill Project was the mass excavation of the landfill units prior to placement of the liner system. COMANCO excavated approximately half a million cubic yards of soil through the use of track excavators and off-road articulated trucks.

Screening and Processing

The excavated material was then process through one of the two on-site portable screening plants operated by CEC. The excavated materials was screened and processed to project specifications for later use in the recompacted clay layer or for use as protective cover.

Recompacted Clay Liner

The processed soil material was then reincorporated into the composite liner system which consisted of a two feet clay layer with a 60 mil HDPE liner and geotextile. The process clay was installed in six inch lifts, conditioned to the proper moisture content, and compacted as required. The resulting clay liner will provide a nearly impermeable layer should any leachate escape from the landfill.

HDPE Liner and Geotextile

The recompacted clay liner was covered with a HDPE liner and geotextile. Leachate collection and transmission lines were installed at critical locations. The final liner system received two feet of protective soil material.

COMANCO accelerated the completion of the project to assist the owner who had limited airspace remaining on the existing cells. Despite the accelerated schedule, CEC completed the project under budget and presented the owner with much needed airspace well before the original completion date.
