For the tenth year COMANCO sponsored and participated in the annual Lakeland Pig Festival, held this year from Jan 28-30th. The festival, which is put on by the Junior League of Greater Lakeland, Inc and sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) is both a competative and charitable event. Since its inception in 1997 over 300 teams from more than 17 states have come to Lakeland to show off their grill skills. This year's turnout was estimated to be 35,000, a great showing despite light showers throughout Saturday. Friday saw the largest crowds, with many vendors selling out early due to the unexpected surge. Many of the guests were there to see popular musical acts Bitter Edge and Damon Fowler as well as get first dibs on the BBQ. The Lakeland Pig Fest is a great community event, with a dedicated area for children and families. Local powerhouses Publix Super Markets, Inc and CF Industries, Inc are both sponsors of the event, as are Mosaic, Inc, Ardaman & Associates and of course, COMANCO. Over its lifetime the Lakeland Pig Fest has generated more than $250,000 for Polk County charitable institutions.
